A Quick Guide
Planning permission for Log Cabins
When deciding to put a log cabin, shed, or garden building in the grounds of your house, you will need to consider whether it will need planning permission or not.
In most cases, a building can be put in your garden without applying for planning permission as long as it satisfies certain Permitted Development rules. Simply work your way through all the questions answering yes or no to find out whether you can go right ahead with your project or if you need to apply for planning permission.
Before you start – some important notes!
This guide relates specifically to planning requirements in England. Planning policies and permitted development rules may differ in Wales and other parts of the UK, so it is important to check the guidance that applies to your location.
The information applies to houses only and does not cover flats, maisonettes or other types of building. Some properties, including certain homes within a row of terraces, may also fall outside the usual permitted development rules.
It is always worth checking with your Local Planning Authority before proceeding, as permitted development rights can sometimes be removed or restricted. This may apply if your property is listed, located within a designated area, or forms part of a newer housing development where additional planning conditions are in place.
