Having experienced three years of fighting a losing battle trying to keep 3/4 acre of lawn neat and tidy, partly due to my limited available time and certainly due to being the sad owner of a Countax lawn tractor that breaks at the sight of grass, I eventually gave in to employing contractors to come once a fortnight to cut my grass, but they would not collect the clippings and the lawn always looked messy after cutting and too long just before cutting and yet we had to pay a hefty fee for a disappointing service.

So my wife bought one for my birthday and we named him Larry. He looked fairly innocent and ineffective in his box and to be honest we laughed and thought 'no way is this going to work!'

We did employ experts to set him up correctly, which is absolutely essential, and then we let him loose on the lawn in March 2009.

Larry hasn't stopped since, except for a well earned Christmas break and during a short period of snow. He has been merrily cutting away day and night, seven days a week.

Our lawn has never looked so smart and nicely manicured with no clippings. 'Larry' lawn mower is very quiet, so no disturbance to anyone. As he senses his battery strength dropping he makes his way back to his docking station and with micro precision aligns himself perfectly and then "click", he plugs himself in for a well earned rest and a "recharge".

A short time later he is off again but as he leaves the docking station he is programmed to head off to a different zone to make sure he covers the whole area over each 24 hour period. Because of this he only needs to cut off one day's growth each day which falls back into the lawn to stifle weeds and provide nutrients to the lawn.

It is necessary to change his blades approximately once a month. These are razor blade like and simply screw into place but they cost 10p each so that is £3.60 a year on maintenance and we are told the electricity charge is about £20 per year. It was costing more than that with a tank of fuel in the tractor and three times that amount every fortnight with the contractors.

Larry cuts around pathways, trees and fences. He goes up slopes and manages to survive various other obstacles left by the dog and the rabbits. We are so impressed that we have now bought 'Barry' the bigger model to deal with another 1 1/2 acres around a lake.

Our friends, family and visitors are always amazed by Larry and very impressed. In a nutshell he is the best tool I have ever bought and has saved me hours of tedious work and hundreds of pounds. It is not a gimmick or a toy, it is a very intelligent robot with incredibly sophisticated programmes.

They can take care of all the installation and set up and leave you to sit back and watch the performance. As their slogan says "times have changed". Lawns being cut throughout the night is previously unheard of and who in their right mind would still prefer to operate a noisy, expensive lawn mower or tractor for hours on end only to have to do it all again a day or so later?
